That's correct.

Two years after, to be precise.

The world's still paranoid about nuclear strike. Not that the timeline I'm from is much better.

When are you from, then?

I'm not surprised to hear that the world is constantly on the verge of war. It sounds like business as usual to me.

2014. Seems to be the same year here, too.

But the world I know has an economy that is fueled by constant war. Proxy wars fought by mercenaries who have no stakes in it safe for making money.

Not the best place to come from.

It doesn't sound like it.

What the hell happened to cause the world to collapse in fifty years?

[Was it the Philosophers? It was the Philosophers, wasn't it.]

I don't know.

But if it's not fixed, future generations are going to suffer.

[ It was a poor lie, since Snake knew the Patriots were responsible, but he also knew better than to just tell everything he knew to everyone... ]

[Unfortunately, Ocelot is too young to know anything at all about the Patriots. He doesn't entirely believe that this person is clueless, though.

Call it intuition since he's been spying on both GRU and the KGB for the CIA the entire time.]

Well, someone's taken control of the machines that control the economy and everything else. Made a real mess of things... At least right now people aren't killing each other.

[ Well, except all the people that died in Europe because of Liquid and his soldiers. But now no one is dying. ]

You have machines that run the world?

That's one decryption away from Armageddon. That sounds ridiculously stupid.

Hey, I never said it was a good idea. They thought it was fool-proof, but one fool got in and now he's running the show.

Everything would be a lot better without those machines, but if you just cut them off, people will suffer everywhere. There's no easy way out of this.

[Ah, yes. The vague "they." Ocelot is intimately familiar with that.]

Clearly it wasn't foolproof enough. It must have been a codebreaker who did it, then.

People like that will show off when given the chance.

[ Snake rolled his eyes. He didn't really want to think of Liquid as a codebreaker, but Ocelot did have a lot of connections, and a lot of control... using that, he could really do anything he wanted. ]

It's more complicated than that, but this guy is a big show off.

[It's not like Ocelot has the ability to know everything that was going to happen in the future, so he's going to be content with imagining that the encryption for the supercomputers controlling the world is just that shitty because the idea is hilarious.]

I have experience with that type of person. With enough power, the destruction they can do is incredible.

The problem comes with trying to stop them. It's usually not very easy.

[ Although Snake had ample chances to just shoot Liquid in the head, but he's a polite listener for some reason and just chose to let the guy get away so many times. ]

He likes to talk... A lot. And stand on tall things and rant at people...

I knew someone who also enjoyed standing around and talking. He liked to consider himself important and unkillable as well.

Past tense, right? I guess that means he was killable in the end.

They all are. Even if it feels like they just won't die.

It was either a long time ago or a short while ago, depending on perspective. There's no such thing as immortality. Of course people can be killed.

Not immortality, but how about ghosts? I don't really believe in them, but it's hard not to when one of your enemies is possessed by the ghost of your dead brother.

[Well, there is the whole "The Sorrow talked to the dead" thing, which given the powers the until recently living members of the Cobra had, was probably a literal thing, but there's no reason for him to be honest about that.]

I've never given much thought about ghosts.

[ Let's ignore all those LET'S TAKE PICTURES OF GHOSTS stuff. ]

Unavoidable right now, though. There are a lot of Ghost-Types in this world. Makes me wonder if they were always ghosts, or if some Pokémon died and turned into a Ghost only to be caught again.

I've got one of those. It doesn't bother me, but I can imagine it would be rather unpleasant for some people.

It was a little freaky, seeing it at first. But it's fine now.

They look distinctly enough not like people that it's not too bad. If they looked like people or other Pokémon, then yeah, it'd be pretty freaky.

You have a point.

Even the humanoid looking Pokemon look different enough that there isn't much of a problem. It would be rather disturbing if they looked more human.
