Bluntly put, the significance of petty thievery is to pass the time and collect a paycheck between missions. If it can be done easily and you get rewarded for doing it well and doing it consistently, I don't see why you would refuse. Deciding that it's beneath you isn't going to endear you to those higher up the chain of command.

However, I'm a soldier myself, and I've been here long enough that I don't have to rely on such things anymore. I take far more interesting missions, and I hand out several others; it's far easier to carry out the sort of thing I prefer doing with others than it is on my own.

In other words, I may have work for you from time to time, should you want it.
